いやー、こんな素晴らしいライブ音源が埋まっていたとは！ご存じ「YES」が1972年秋に行った北米ツアー7公演のライブ音源が“発掘”されました。名盤「Yes Songs」と同時期ということらしいです。一応、ノーカットのフルライブという触れ込みで14枚組という圧倒的な物量です。アルバムアートデザインはもちろんロジャー・ディーンによるもの。原盤はオープンリールだそうです。

おっと忘れてはいけないメンバー紹介。

このツアー直前、Robert FrippによってBill Brufordを“強奪”されてしまい、代替メンバーとして急遽Alan Whiteが加入していますが、ツアー初日までわずか3日のリハーサル期間しかなかったとのことです。そいつは、大変だ。

トロント公演とオタワ公演で一部曲順が入れ替わっているだけで、曲目はすべて同じ。しかも、インプロはほとんどないのが彼らの持ち味なので、いったい自分がどの公演を聴いているかを見失ってしまうほどの見事な“金太郎飴状態”です。意外にもライブでは結構自由性があったKing Crimsonとは実に対照的ですよね。Bill Brufordの才能がCrimsonで一挙に開花したのも、このライブを聴いて納得できました。対するAlan Whiteのプレイは教科書的で確かに面白味に欠けるというか、大過なくこなしているというか。ここらへんはそれぞれの持ち味だから仕方がないのですが。驚くことにMCまでもが各公演ともほとんど同じ。おそらく台本があるのだと思いますが、これほどまでに自己イメージにこだわるバンドも当時は珍しかったのではないでしょうか。

完成品「Yes Songs」と比較してしまうと、音質は今一つですし、ミスタッチや録音トラブルもそのまま再現されているので、ライブ作品としてはマニア向けの域を出ませんが、そうした“アラ”を十二分にカバーして余りある熱量が凄まじいの一語です。最も脂が乗っていた時期のライブ音源に出会えただけで感謝しないといけません。「Roundabout」からのアンコール「Yours Is No Disgrace」への流れはいま聴いてもゾクゾクします。 

ところで輸入盤は1万円前後、対して日本盤は1万9千円強。日本盤はSHM-CD仕様ということですが、この値段差の違いはあまりといえばあまりですよね。こんな阿漕な商売をしていたら、本当にいつか罰が当たりますよ。
