フリー系のバリトンサックス奏者John Surman（ジョン・サーマン）による70年代前期の音源をまとめたアンソロジーものです。迂闊にも知らなかったのですが2006年にリリースされています。

この手のミュージシャンの一般的な評価というか需要はかなり低いといううことは厳然たる事実ではありますが、それにしてもそんなSurmanの音源を3枚のCDにまとめてしまうという太っ腹ぶりには感服します。というわけで中身をご紹介。

いずれもJohn Surmanの代表作といえる名盤ですが、「The Trio」「Where Fortune Smiles」などは結構入手困難だったりするので、まとめて聴いてみたい人やこれからSurmanに挑もうと考えている人にとっては重宝するかもしれません。個人的にはSurman、Martin、Phillipsの3人による丁々発止のインプロ合戦がスリリングな「The Trio」が一番のおすすめ盤ですが、John McLaughlinとの激しいバトルが聴ける「Where Fortune Smiles」はやはり英国ジャズロックを語るうえでは欠かせない重要作品です。特に[CD 3]#4「New Place,Old Place」で聴くことのできる凄まじいインプロの応酬は必聴です♪
